Welcome to LogWatch 1.4.6 (09/09/98).

This was written specifically for Red Hat Linux 5.0, although it can be
used on any system if you only replace/modify/add the actual filters.

What is LogWatch?

LogWatch is a customizable, pluggable log-monitoring system. It will go
through your logs for a given period of time and make a report in the areas
that you wish with the detail that you wish.

------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I use it?

Well, it should pretty much work on its own, sending you an
email every night. For more configuration options, run
'logwatch --help' or edit /etc/log.d/conf/logwatch.conf.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Since this is the second public release, some bugs will be sure to
come out. I really need to hear about these! I also really need to
hear about any "unmatched" log entries you get in your reports (you
will know what I mean when you get them).

In a future release, I will write up documentation on how to write
your own filters to expand the capabilities of LogWatch. Filters
can be written in any language and are really quite easy to write,
as LogWatch does all the hard stuff before the filter ever runs.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want me to add support for a new set of log entries, please
email me all the log entries you can from that service from as many
machines as possible!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Items planned for future releases:

   * Extended log processing, including:
      - /var/log/maillog
      - /var/log/spooler ?
      - HTTPD logs ?

   * Better date-range options

------------------------------------------------------------------

If this program quits while it is running, it will leave
a /tmp/logwatch* directory behind.
